The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
