British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.
RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
